The 1911 Indianapolis 500: Engineering Supremacy and the Dawn of the Brickyard
 
The inaugural International 500-Mile Sweepstakes, held on May 30, 1911, stands as a foundational moment in automotive history. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a 2.5-mile rectangular oval founded by Carl G. Fisher, had been resurfaced in late 1909 with 3.2 million street-paving bricks, earning it the permanent moniker "The Brickyard." With its four distinct turns banked at 9°12', the circuit demanded unprecedented mechanical durability and driver focus.
 
The race was won by the #32 Marmon "Wasp," an engineering marvel entered by the Marmon Motor Car Company. The Wasp was powered by a 447 cubic-inch (7.3L) inline-six engine and featured a pioneering narrow, single-seat "monoposto" bodywork. To circumvent the requirement for a riding mechanic, driver Ray Harroun outfitted the car with a rear-view mirror - the first documented application of its kind in a racing context.
 
While Harroun is the primary victor of record, historical accuracy dictates the acknowledgment of Cyrus Patschke, who served as a relief driver for approximately 35 laps during the mid-section of the race. This allowed Harroun a necessary respite from the brutal vibrations of the brick surface. The Marmon Wasp completed the 200 laps in 6:42:08, averaging 74.602 mph. Despite a post-race protest regarding lap-scoring during a mid-race accident, Harroun’s victory was upheld, cementing the Marmon Wasp’s place as the first legendary machine of Indianapolis.
