INDY-500 WINNERS Art Print Series by Alex Book
The 1912 Indianapolis 500: The Resilience of the National Model 40
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), established in 1909 and famously known as "The Brickyard" due to its 3.2 million paving bricks, hosted its second 500-mile international sweepstakes on May 30, 1912. The 2.5-mile rectangular oval, featuring four turns banked at 9°12', remained a brutal test of mechanical endurance. A key rule change for 1912 mandated a riding mechanic for all entries, returning to the two-man cockpit standard.
The race is historically defined by the dramatic late-stage mechanical failure of Ralph DePalma, who led 196 laps before a connecting rod broke. This allowed Joe Dawson and his riding mechanic Harry Martin to secure a historic victory for the National Motor Vehicle Company. Driving the National Model 40, an American-built machine featuring a massive 491 cubic-inch (8.0L) four-cylinder engine, Dawson maintained a steady, high-performance pace. The National was a formidable example of pre-war American engineering, utilizing a high-displacement T-head configuration.
Dawson completed the 200 laps in 6:21:06, setting a new record average speed of 78.719 mph. A notable fact of this race was Dawson’s youth; at 22, he remained the youngest winner for decades. The 1912 event solidified the "500" as a premier global contest where reliability proved as critical as outright speed on the demanding brick surface.
