INDY-500 WINNERS Art Print Series by Alex Book
The 1913 Indianapolis 500: The European Technical Revolution
The third running of the 500-mile international sweepstakes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway marked a pivotal shift in motorsport engineering. By 1913, the 2.5-mile circuit, colloquially known as "The Brickyard," had established itself as the ultimate proving ground for automotive innovation. The year’s entry list was characterized by a fierce technological rivalry between high-displacement American machines and more sophisticated, efficient European designs.
The race was dominated by French driver Jules Goux and his riding mechanic Emil Begin, representing the Automobiles Peugeot team. Their vehicle, the Peugeot L76, was a masterpiece of contemporary engineering. It featured a 4.5-liter (274 cu in) inline-four engine with groundbreaking dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder - a configuration developed by the legendary "Charlatans" (Ernest Henry and drivers Zuccarelli, Boillot, and Goux). Despite having a significantly smaller engine displacement than its American rivals, the L76’s superior efficiency and high-revving capability allowed Goux to outpace the field.
Goux led 138 laps and completed the distance in 6:35:05, averaging 75.933 mph. Historically, this victory is famous not only for being the first win by a European driver and car but also for Goux’s unconventional hydration strategy, reportedly consuming several bottles of champagne during pit stops. Technical historians regard the 1913 Peugeot L76 as the blueprint for the modern racing engine, as its DOHC architecture remains the standard for performance powerplants today.
