The 1914 Indianapolis 500: The Delage Dominance

By the fourth running of the 500-mile international sweepstakes on May 30, 1914, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway had firmly established its reputation as a global stage for technical supremacy. The 2.5-mile "Brickyard" surface continued to act as a relentless filter for mechanical weaknesses, demanding a perfect balance of chassis rigidity and engine thermal efficiency. The 1914 event was notable for a field heavily influenced by French engineering, which had begun to redefine the parameters of speed on the rectangular oval.

The race was won by the French aviator and driver René Thomas and his riding mechanic Robert Laly, driving for the Louis Delâge Company. Their vehicle, the Delage Type-Y, was a sophisticated racing machine equipped with a 4.5-liter (274 cu in) inline-four engine. Following the innovative DOHC trend set the previous year, the Delage featured a highly advanced valvetrain with four valves per cylinder operated by dual overhead camshafts, coupled with a unique horizontal valve actuation system. This allowed the Type-Y to produce high power while maintaining durability over the grueling 500-mile distance.

Thomas maintained a clinical pace, leading the race for 102 laps and finishing with a time of 6:03:45. His record-breaking average speed of 82.474 mph was the first to eclipse the 80-mph barrier at Indianapolis. The 1914 podium was a clean sweep for French manufacturers (Delage, Peugeot, and Peugeot), a result that prompted American manufacturers to drastically accelerate their overhead-cam engine development in the following seasons.
