INDY-500 WINNERS Art Print Series by Alex Book
The 1915 Indianapolis 500: Technical Mastery and Redemption
The fifth international sweepstakes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), held on May 31, 1915, remains a definitive chapter in pre-war motorsport history. Established in 1909 as a testing ground for the automotive industry, the 2.5-mile rectangular oval earned the name "The Brickyard" after 3.2 million paving bricks were laid to stabilize the track surface. With its four corners banked at 9°12', the circuit demanded extreme mechanical durability, particularly as average speeds began to approach the 90-mph threshold.
The 1915 race was a tactical duel between European engineering philosophies, specifically the refined French Peugeots and the robust German Mercedes. The victory was claimed by Ralph DePalma and his riding mechanic Louis Fontaine, driving a Mercedes 18/100HP entered by E.C. Patterson. The vehicle featured a 4.5-liter (274 cu in) four-cylinder engine equipped with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and four valves per cylinder. This powerplant, a direct descendant of the 1914 French Grand Prix-winning Mercedes, was lauded for its superior metallurgy and high-endurance capabilities.
DePalma’s victory was a significant act of redemption following his legendary mechanical failure while leading the 1912 race. In 1915, he engaged in a relentless pursuit of Dario Resta, eventually taking the lead on lap 135. Despite a broken connecting rod in the final laps - threatening a repeat of his 1912 heartbreak - the Mercedes held together to finish in 5:33:55, setting a new record average speed of 89.840 mph. This event solidified the Mercedes 18/100HP’s status as a pinnacle of early 20th-century automotive design and marked DePalma's greatest career achievement at the Speedway.
