The 1920 Indian Scout Model G-20: Engineering Revolution
The introduction of the 1920 Model G-20 Indian Scout by the Hendee Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, marked a pivotal shift in motorcycle architecture. Designed by the legendary engineer Charles B. Franklin, the Scout G-20 was the culmination of meticulous development throughout 1919, officially entering the market for the 1920 season. It was engineered to bridge the gap between heavy-duty twins and lightweight singles, offering a sophisticated middleweight platform that would dominate both endurance runs and early competition.
The technical heart of the G-20 was its 36.38 cubic inch (approx. 596 cc) 42-degree V-twin Powerplus-type motor. Rated at 11 1/2 h.p., the engine utilized a side-valve configuration and was revolutionary for its semi-unit construction. Unlike the separate engine and gearbox arrangements of its competitors, Franklin bolted the three-speed transmission directly to the crankcase. A standout technical feature was the primary drive, which employed a set of precision-cut helical gears housed in an oil-tight cast aluminum casing. This eliminated the maintenance-heavy primary chain, a hallmark of Indian’s superior engineering at the time.
The G-20’s chassis was equally advanced, featuring a double-cradle frame that positioned the engine low for an improved center of gravity. It retained the Springfield firm’s iconic leaf-spring front fork for suspension. Induction was managed by a Schebler carburetor, with ignition provided by a Splitdorf high-tension magneto. Without the complexity of front-wheel braking - a common omission for the era - the Scout relied on a rear-wheel brake, yet its agility and power-to-weight ratio made it a formidable machine. This model laid the foundation for the "Scout" legacy, proving that reliability and high-speed performance could coexist in a compact, 36.38 cubic inch displacement package.
