The Inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans: Endurance Excellence at La Sarthe
The first Grand Prix d’Endurance de 24 Heures in 1923 was more than a race; it was the ultimate trial for the burgeoning automotive industry. On the night of May 26, 1923, André Lagache and René Léonard demonstrated the superior stamina of their Chenard-Walcker Type U3 15CV Sport. Navigating the 17.262 km Circuit de la Sarthe through heavy rain and darkness, the French duo managed to outpace a field of 33 starters, completing 128 laps. Their performance validated the efficiency of the 3.0-litre powerplant and the durability of the Chenard et Walcker chassis over a grueling 24-hour period.
Technically, the Type U3 15CV was among the most advanced machines on the grid. Its 2,978 cc straight-4 engine utilized a sophisticated overhead-valve (OHV) arrangement, producing consistent power that allowed Lagache and Léonard to maintain a steady pace through the Mulsanne Straight. A defining feature of the car was its innovative braking: while many competitors struggled with rear-only setups, the Chenard-Walcker employed a specialized four-wheel braking system designed to handle the rapid weight shifts on the unpaved, mud-slicked public roads.
The team's success was also aided by the use of Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels for quick changes and powerful Marchal lighting, which allowed the drivers to maintain high speeds during the critical night hours. By finishing four laps ahead of their teammates in the second Chenard-Walcker, Lagache and Léonard not only won the Rudge-Whitworth Triennial Cup but also established the blueprint for endurance racing strategy.
