The 1927 Eifelrennen: The Nürburgring’s Baptism of Fire

On June 19, 1927, the inaugural race for sports cars was held at the newly constructed Nürburgring in the Eifel mountains. The event, known as the ADAC Eifelrennen, saw Rudolf Caracciola and his riding mechanic Wilhelm Sebastian secure a dominant victory, forever linking Caracciola’s name with the "Green Hell." Driving the formidable Mercedes-Benz Typ S, Caracciola conquered the massive 28.265 km Gesamtstrecke (the combined North and South loops), completing 12 laps in 3 hours, 33 minutes, and 21 seconds at an average speed of 95.5 km/h.

The Mercedes-Benz Typ S (Sport), nicknamed "The White Elephant" due to its immense power and white livery, was the first masterpiece of Ferdinand Porsche for the newly merged Daimler-Benz AG. The vehicle was powered by a massive 6.8-litre (6,789 cc) straight-6 engine equipped with a Roots-type supercharger (kompressor). This technical arrangement allowed the engine to produce 120 hp in naturally aspirated mode and a staggering 180 hp when the supercharger was engaged by fully depressing the accelerator pedal.

The Typ S featured a lowered "low-slung" chassis for improved cornering stability on the Nürburgring’s 172 turns. Despite its weight, the car’s massive torque and high-performance braking system - acting on all four wheels - allowed Caracciola to master the steep gradients and sharp bends of the Eifel circuit. This victory was the first major international success for the Typ S, establishing the Mercedes-Benz "S-Series" (S, SS, SSK) as the most dominant force in late-1920s motor racing and cementing the Nürburgring's status as the ultimate test of man and machine.
