The 1935 German Grand Prix: Nuvolari’s Impossible Victory

On July 28, 1935, the VIII Großer Preis von Deutschland at the Nürburgring Nordschleife witnessed what is widely considered the greatest driving performance in Grand Prix history. Tazio Nuvolari, supported by chief mechanic Amadeo Bignami, faced the overwhelming technological might of the state-funded Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union teams. Despite driving an aging Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 against significantly more powerful German "Silver Arrows," Nuvolari exploited his legendary car control and the treacherous Eifel rain to secure a stunning victory before a crowd of 300,000.

The Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, entered by Scuderia Ferrari, was a highly evolved version of the 1932 design. By 1935, it featured a bored-out 3.8-litre straight-8 engine, equipped with twin Roots-type superchargers. This 3.8L unit produced approximately 265 hp - a significant deficit compared to the 400+ hp of the Mercedes W25. To remain competitive, the P3 utilized a unique "split-drive" rear axle, where the differential was placed immediately behind the gearbox, transmitting power via two diagonal shafts to the rear wheels. This reduced unsprung weight and improved traction on the 172 corners of the 22.810 km Nordschleife.

A critical moment occurred during a disastrous mid-race pit stop where a manual fuel pump failed, forcing Bignami and the crew to refuel the Alfa using churns and funnels, costing Nuvolari over two minutes. Undeterred, Nuvolari began a historic pursuit, overtaking Manfred von Brauchitsch on the final lap. The victory was so unexpected that the German authorities had not prepared the Italian national anthem for the podium ceremony. In a final stroke of bravado, Nuvolari provided his own personal copy of the "Marcia Reale" disc to the organizers. His triumph in the outmoded P3 remains the definitive example of driver skill overcoming a technical disadvantage, solidifying "The Flying Mantuan" as a motorsport icon.
