1950 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1950 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone and marked the first Formula One World Championship race in history. It was the opening round of the inaugural seven-race 1950 World Championship of Drivers and was also designated as the European Grand Prix for the season. The event represented the formal beginning of the Formula One World Championship era.

Qualifying

Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina secured pole position driving for Alfa Romeo. Ferrari did not participate in the event, as Enzo Ferrari declined to enter cars due to disagreements over appearance money, leaving Alfa Romeo as the clear pre-race favourite.

The Race

According to the official classification, the 70-lap race was won by Nino Farina driving an Alfa Romeo 158. He led home a complete Alfa Romeo podium, with Luigi Fagioli finishing second and Reg Parnell third. Farina completed the race in 2:13:23.6 at an average speed of 146.378 km/h (90.955 mph).

Field and Entries

A total of 24 drivers were entered, competing in 22 cars, with numbers 7 and 13 not assigned. Alfa Romeo fielded four cars, while their primary opposition came from Maserati entries run by Scuderia Ambrosiana and the Enrico Platé team. Felice Bonetto was entered in a Maserati but did not arrive for the race.

Historical Context

The race was attended by King George VI, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, and the Earl and Countess Mountbatten of Burma, making it the only Formula One Grand Prix in Britain attended by a reigning British monarch. Supporting events included an international 500cc Formula Three race won by Stirling Moss and a demonstration run of the BRM P15, previewing Britain’s future Grand Prix ambitions.
