1950 F1 Monaco Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1950 Monaco GP was held on 21 May 1950 on the streets of Monte Carlo and was the second round of the inaugural Formula One World Championship. Officially titled the Prix de Monte-Carlo et XIe Grand Prix Automobile, the race was run over 100 laps, covering a total distance of 318.1 kilometres. It took place on the tight, pre-war Monaco layout, where track position and precision were critical.

The Race

According to the official classification, Juan Manuel Fangio won the race driving for Alfa Romeo. Starting from pole position, he controlled the event and secured victory on the narrow street circuit. Alberto Ascari finished second for Ferrari, while Louis Chiron completed the podium in third driving a Maserati.

Historical Significance

The 1950 Monaco Grand Prix marked Ferrari’s first appearance in a Formula One World Championship race, making the event a milestone for the sport’s most famous constructor. The race also confirmed Alfa Romeo’s early dominance in the opening phase of the championship.

Driver Context: Juan Manuel Fangio

Juan Manuel Fangio was a central figure of early Formula One and later became a five-time World Drivers’ Champion. The Monaco Grand Prix was his first victory in a Formula One World Championship race. This win established Fangio as a leading contender in the inaugural season and marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in Grand Prix history.

Monaco Tunnel

The tunnel at Monaco was already part of the city’s road network before the World Championship era and had been incorporated into Grand Prix layouts since the interwar years. By 1950, it stood out as the only fully enclosed tunnel used in a Formula One World Championship race, creating a sharp transition from daylight to shadow on each lap. Unlike many temporary street features elsewhere, the Monaco tunnel became a permanent and defining element of the circuit, remaining a constant reference point in its layout for decades and contributing to Monaco’s unique status among Grand Prix venues.
