1950 NASCAR Grand National: Bill Rexford’s Championship Victory at Canfield
The 1950 NASCAR season, the first to be officially designated as the Grand National Division, concluded with Bill Rexford securing the title at the age of 23. This achievement made him the youngest champion in the history of the premier series for several decades. On May 30, 1950, Rexford competed in the 100-Mile NASCAR Grand National Race at Canfield Speedway, a 0.5-mile dirt oval in Ohio. Held on the same day as the Indianapolis 500, this event was known among spectators and participants as the "Poor Man's 500." Rexford drove the Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 owned by Julian Buesink, a vehicle powered by the 303 cubic inch Rocket V8 engine, which produced 135 horsepower.
The race consisted of 200 laps on a dirt surface that became heavily rutted and dusty as the competition progressed. A defining visual feature of the venue was the wooden Main Grandstand, which housed the spectators at the start-finish line. Rexford maintained a tactical position behind the leader for over half the distance. On the 121st lap, the leading car suffered a mechanical failure, allowing Rexford to take the lead. He maintained this position for the remaining 80 laps of the event.
Rexford secured the victory at Canfield, finishing two laps ahead of the second-place driver. This win was the only victory of his career in the premier division and proved essential for his championship campaign. By competing in 17 of the season's 19 races with a focus on mechanical consistency and the durability of the Oldsmobile 88 chassis, he earned enough points to be crowned the 1950 NASCAR Champion. The 1950 title confirmed that the overhead-valve technology of the Oldsmobile Rocket engine was the technical standard for the second year of NASCAR’s top division.
