1951 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Overview
The 1951 British Grand Prix was held on 14 July 1951 at Silverstone and contested over 90 laps. The race marked a decisive turning point in early World Championship history, ending Alfa Romeo’s dominance of Formula One. José Froilán González claimed victory by 51 seconds, securing both his first Grand Prix win and the first World Championship victory for Scuderia Ferrari.

Qualifying and Strategy
González achieved pole position, one second faster than Juan Manuel Fangio, delivering the first pole position of his career and Ferrari’s first pole in the World Championship. Ferrari’s race strategy proved decisive: González made a single fuel stop, while the Alfa Romeos of Fangio and Farina were forced into two lengthy pit stops due to heavy fuel consumption, allowing the Ferrari to build a commanding lead.

Race Result
González converted pole position into victory, finishing first. Fangio recovered to second place for Alfa Romeo, while Luigi Villoresi completed the podium in third for Ferrari, two laps behind. Bonetto and Reg Parnell finished fourth and fifth respectively. Notably, González achieved the win using an older Ferrari chassis and engine than those of his teammates.

Driver Context
José Froilán González (1922–2013), known as “the Pampas Bull,” competed in Formula One from 1950 to 1960. He finished runner-up in the 1954 World Drivers’ Championship with Ferrari and won two World Championship Grands Prix. Beyond Formula One, he claimed overall victory at the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans with Ferrari. González is permanently linked to Ferrari history for delivering the team’s first World Championship Grand Prix victory at the 1951 British Grand Prix.
