1951 NASCAR Grand National: The Championship of Herb Thomas

The 1951 NASCAR Grand National season established the Hudson Hornet as a dominant technical force under the ownership and driving of Herb Thomas. On September 3, 1951, Thomas entered the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, a 400-lap endurance event held on the 1.25-mile egg-shaped asphalt oval. The Hudson Hornet’s primary advantage was its "step-down" design, which integrated the floorpan into the frame rails. This configuration lowered the center of gravity and provided superior stability through Darlington's high-speed turns compared to traditional body-on-frame competitors. The vehicle was powered by the 308 cubic inch "H-145" straight-six engine, which produced 145 horsepower.

Thomas started the Southern 500 from the 2nd position on the front row. A notable landmark of the 1951 race was the historic pedestrian bridge located on the backstretch, a wooden structure that allowed spectators to access the infield during the event. Throughout the race, Thomas managed the mechanical load on the abrasive asphalt surface, eventually taking the lead on the 329th lap. He secured the victory at Darlington with a margin of over one lap, demonstrating the reliability and handling efficiency of the Hudson chassis.

During the 1951 season, Thomas recorded 34 starts, securing 7 victories and 18 top-ten finishes. These results provided the necessary points to be crowned the 1951 NASCAR Champion, marking the first time the title was won by a driver utilizing a Hudson Hornet. Thomas, a former truck farmer from North Carolina, became the first owner-driver to win the championship in the premier division. The 1951 campaign validated the "step-down" Hudson as the technical benchmark for the Grand National Division in the early 1950s.
