1954 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1954 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone and was part of the Formula One World Championship. The race was run over 90 laps and attracted a very large crowd, drawn by expectations of another strong showing from Mercedes following their dominant performance at Reims. In the event, Mercedes fielded only two cars, while Ferrari and Maserati arrived with larger and more experienced entries.

The Race

The race was won by José Froilán González driving for Ferrari after starting from second position. Mike Hawthorn finished second in another Ferrari, securing a Ferrari one–two finish. Onofre Marimón completed the podium in third place for Maserati, marking the second and final World Championship podium of his career.

Key Moments

Juan Manuel Fangio set the fastest lap of the race, becoming the first driver to lap Silverstone at an average speed exceeding 100 mph. Although he briefly challenged for second place, handling difficulties and contact with trackside oil drums dropped him down the order. Stirling Moss later retired with rear axle problems, shaping the final podium outcome.

The Race and Peter Collins

Peter Collins competed in the British Grand Prix driving a Vanwall Special. His race ended early when he retired on lap 16 due to engine failure. The retirement was part of Vanwall’s difficult debut season in Formula One, as the team continued development of its first Grand Prix cars.

The Car: Vanwall Special

The Vanwall Special was an early Formula One design built by the British manufacturer founded by Tony Vandervell. The team entered Formula One for the first time in 1954 and was still in an experimental phase. Despite early reliability issues, Vanwall would go on to become a major force later in the decade, winning the inaugural Formula One Constructors’ Championship in 1958.

Silverstone: Copse Corner

The approach to Copse Corner was one of Silverstone’s fastest sections, taken at high speed on the former airfield circuit. In 1954, it emphasized aerodynamic stability and courage, and served as a visual focal point of the British Grand Prix layout.
