1954 NASCAR Grand National: The Championship of Lee Petty
 
The 1954 NASCAR Grand National season concluded with Lee Petty securing his first premier series title, representing a technical shift toward high-displacement Chrysler powerplants. On October 17, 1954, Petty competed in the Martinsville 200 at Martinsville Speedway, which at the time was a 0.5-mile dirt oval. The track, founded in 1947 by H. Clay Earles, was noted for its tight, paperclip-shaped layout with 12-degree banking in the turns. A primary visual characteristic of the event was the crowd of spectators situated along the perimeter of the old Martinsville Speedway dirt surface.
 
Petty campaigned for his family-run team, Petty Enterprises, utilizing a Chrysler New Yorker. The vehicle featured the 331 cubic inch FirePower V8 engine, the first generation of the Chrysler Hemi. This overhead-valve (OHV) engine produced approximately 235 horsepower, providing a significant output advantage over the aging straight-six Hudsons. Mechanically, the Chrysler’s high curb weight required specialized suspension reinforcement to manage the centrifugal loads on the short dirt oval. Lee Petty, who operated a trucking business and a small farm in Randleman, North Carolina, focused his preparation on mechanical endurance and fuel efficiency.
 
In the Martinsville 200, which spanned 200 laps, Petty started from the 3rd position. The race was characterized by high attrition as the dirt surface deteriorated, creating heavy dust and ruts that compromised cooling systems. Petty secured the victory, leading for a total of 135 laps and finishing ahead of Hershel McGriff. Throughout the 1954 season, Petty recorded 34 starts, achieving 7 victories and 32 top-ten finishes. These results provided the points necessary to secure the 1954 NASCAR Championship. The campaign established the Chrysler Hemi V8 as the new technical standard for the Grand National Division, effectively ending the period of dominance held by the Hudson Hornet.
