1954 F1 Swiss Grand Prix Art Print

Race Overview

The 1954 Swiss Grand Prix was held on 22 August 1954 at the Bremgarten Circuit near Bern and run over 66 laps. It was the seventh round of the 1954 World Championship of Drivers. Juan Manuel Fangio won the race for Mercedes after starting from second position, continuing the manufacturer’s dominance during the season. José Froilán González finished second for Ferrari, while Hans Herrmann completed the podium in third for Mercedes.

Race Development

Fangio established control of the race from the opening laps and was never seriously challenged for the lead. Behind him, Stirling Moss moved past González into second place and attempted to close the gap to his teammate. Moss’s pursuit ended when his engine failed. Mike Hawthorn, who had been challenging Moss, later retired with fuel feed problems. These retirements allowed González to regain second position, while Fangio went on to lap the entire field up to second place and secure victory by nearly one minute.

Historical Significance

The 1954 Swiss Grand Prix was the final Formula One World Championship race held in Switzerland. Following the 1955 Le Mans disaster, the Swiss government introduced a nationwide ban on circuit motor racing. As a result, Switzerland did not host another World Championship Grand Prix, and no circuit racing took place in the country for decades. Limited motor racing returned only in 2018 with a Formula E event in Zürich after regulations were relaxed for electric vehicles.

González won two World Championship Grands Prix and was also a leading endurance racer, claiming overall victory at the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans with Ferrari. His career placed him among the most important figures in Ferrari’s early Formula One history.
