1955 NASCAR Grand National: The Championship of Tim Flock
The 1955 NASCAR Grand National season was characterized by the introduction of professional team management standards under owner Carl Kiekhaefer, the founder of Mercury Marine. On April 24, 1955, Tim Flock competed in the Langhorne 150 at Langhorne Speedway, a 1.0-mile dirt oval in Pennsylvania. Langhorne was recognized for its nearly circular geometry and lacked traditional straightaways, which necessitated constant lateral loading on the suspension. A primary architectural feature of the venue was the elevated wooden flagstand situated directly above the start-finish line.
Flock operated the Chrysler 300, a vehicle that integrated the 331 cubic inch FirePower V8 engine with dual four-barrel carburetors and a high-output camshaft. This mechanical configuration produced 300 horsepower, establishing a new power-to-weight benchmark for the Grand National Division. Kiekhaefer implemented strict maintenance protocols, including the frequent replacement of critical components and the use of professional car transporters, which was an anomaly in the mid-1950s. Tim Flock, who had briefly retired from racing in 1954 to operate a filling station, returned to competition specifically to drive for the Kiekhaefer team.
During the Langhorne 150, which spanned 150 laps, Flock secured the pole position with a qualifying speed of 89.419 mph. The race was defined by the deterioration of the dirt surface, particularly in the section known as "Puke Hollow," where ruts caused significant mechanical stress on steering linkages. Flock led for 116 laps and secured the victory, finishing ahead of Lee Petty. Throughout the 1955 season, Flock recorded 39 starts, achieving 18 victories and 33 top-ten finishes. These results provided the points required to secure the 1955 NASCAR Championship, marking his second career title. The campaign validated the Kiekhaefer-Chrysler combination as the technical standard for professionalized stock car racing.
