Sam Hanks and the Epperly "Belond Exhaust Special": A Revolution at the Brickyard

The 1957 Indianapolis 500 remains a watershed moment in American open-wheel racing, marking the triumph of technical ingenuity and the crowning achievement of Sam Hanks. A veteran of the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," Hanks secured his victory on his 13th attempt - a record for persistence at the time. A versatile master of midgets and sprint cars, and the 1953 AAA National Champion, Hanks announced his retirement in Victory Lane, ending a distinguished career at the very pinnacle of the sport.

The vehicle that propelled him to this historic win was the Epperly "Belond Exhaust Special," a car that fundamentally altered Indy design philosophy. Engineered by George Salih and built by Quinn Epperly, the chassis featured a revolutionary "lay-down" engine configuration. By tilting the venerable 270 cubic-inch Offenhauser (Offy) DOHC inline-four engine at an angle of 18 degrees from the horizontal, Salih significantly lowered the car's center of gravity and reduced its frontal area. This offset placement also improved weight distribution for the left-turn-only oval, allowing for superior cornering speeds and aerodynamic efficiency.

Starting from the middle of the first row, Hanks dominated the race. The "Lay-down Offy" proved so superior that it would win again in 1958 with Jimmy Bryan, validating Salih's radical departure from the traditional upright roadster. Hanks’ victory in the Belond Special stands as a testament to the era’s "backyard" engineering brilliance, where a clever mechanical shift could outpace the establishment and define a legacy.
