INDY-500 WINNERS Art Print Series by Alex Book

1957 Indianapolis 500: The Engineering of the Laydown Roadster

The 41st International 500-Mile Sweepstakes featured the competitive debut of the Belond Exhaust Special, a chassis that deviated from the standard upright roadster geometry of the late 1950s. Designed by George Salih and constructed by Quinn Epperly, the car utilized a 255 cubic inch Offenhauser engine mounted at an 18-degree angle from the horizontal. This configuration lowered the hood line and the center of gravity while shifting the engine weight to the left side of the frame. The technical objective was to reduce the frontal area and improve the car's cornering weight bias for the four turns of the 2.5-mile oval.

Sam Hanks entered the 1957 race for his 13th start at Indianapolis, a career that began at the Speedway in 1940. Outside of his professional racing career, Hanks operated a successful midget car racing program and had previously considered retirement due to injury and mechanical frustrations. Starting from the 13th position in the 5th row, Hanks advanced through the field to secure his only Indianapolis 500 victory. During the event, race officials and spectators utilized the newly installed steel-and-glass Pagoda, which replaced the previous wooden control structures at the start-finish line.

Hanks completed the 500-mile distance with an average speed of 135.601 mph. Upon reaching Victory Lane, he formally announced his retirement from active competition to the officials and the press, making him the first winner to do so immediately following the race. The mechanical success of the Salih-Epperly chassis led to the adoption of the laydown engine configuration by numerous constructors in subsequent years. This victory established the technical viability of low-profile engine packaging in front-engine Indy car design.
