Stirling Moss and the Vanwall VW5: Mastery on the Adriatic Coast
The 1957 Formula 1 Pescara Grand Prix remains a monumental fixture in the annals of Grand Prix racing, being held on the longest circuit ever to host a World Championship event - the daunting 25.8-kilometer Circuito di Pescara. In a display of technical and physical endurance, Stirling Moss delivered one of his most cerebral victories, outclassing Juan Manuel Fangio in the heat of the Italian summer. This win further cemented Moss’s reputation as the greatest driver never to win the World Championship, a pilot whose analytical approach to speed was matched only by his mechanical sympathy.
The Vanwall VW5 used at Pescara was the epitome of British engineering’s rapid ascent. Clad in Frank Costin’s teardrop aerodynamic bodywork, the car was specifically tailored for the high-speed "flying kilometers" of the Pescara straights. Its 2.5-liter Alta-derived inline-four engine, featuring a surface-cooled radiator system and Bosch fuel injection, produced a robust 285 bhp. Crucially, the Vanwall’s Goodyear disc brakes and refined De Dion rear suspension gave Moss a significant advantage over the drum-braked Maseratis on a circuit that punished chassis composure and braking consistency over its grueling 18-lap distance.
Moss’s performance was a tactical masterpiece. After an early battle with Luigi Musso’s Ferrari, Moss exploited the Vanwall’s superior cooling and braking to pull away, eventually winning by over three minutes. This victory was not only a personal triumph for Moss but also marked the first time a British car had won a Grand Prix on Italian soil - a symbolic "invasion" that signaled the end of Italian absolute hegemony. The 1957 Pescara race remains a testament to a time when a single lap lasted ten minutes and a single driver, in a green car from Acton, could conquer the longest road in racing history.
