Peter Collins and the Ferrari Dino 246: A Final Gallop at Silverstone
 
The 1958 British Grand Prix at Silverstone remains a bittersweet chapter in the annals of the Scuderia, marking the final victory of Peter Collins, the "Golden Boy" of British racing. Celebrated for his gallantry - most notably surrendering his car to Juan Manuel Fangio in 1956 - Collins was a driver of immense natural rhythm and mechanical sympathy. On this July afternoon, facing immense pressure from team manager Romolo Tavoni, Collins delivered a virtuoso performance, leading from start to finish to secure his third and final Grand Prix win before his tragic passing at the Nürburgring just weeks later.
 
His weapon was the Ferrari Dino 246, a car of profound sentimental and technical significance. Named in honor of Enzo Ferrari’s late son, Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, it was the first Formula 1 car to be powered by a V6 engine. The 2.4-liter, 65-degree V6-derived unit, designed by Vittorio Jano, was a masterpiece of mid-range torque and high-revving reliability, producing approximately 280 bhp. While the Dino 246 retained a traditional front-engined layout and a De Dion rear axle, its nimble chassis and superior power-to-weight ratio allowed it to remain competitive against the burgeoning mid-engined threat and the sophisticated Vanwalls.
 
At Silverstone, Collins exploited the Dino’s stability through the high-speed sweeps of Abbey and Woodcote, fending off his teammate and close friend Mike Hawthorn. This victory was a defiant statement for the front-engined "monsters" of Maranello on British soil. It stands as the definitive portrait of Collins at his zenith: a man of grace and speed, piloting one of the most beautiful and evocative Ferraris ever to grace the grid.
