Edgar Barth and the Porsche 718 RSK: A Giant-Killer at the Nürburgring
The 1958 German Grand Prix at the formidable Nürburgring Nordschleife remains a watershed moment for Zuffenhausen, marking the point where Porsche evolved from a class-winner into a genuine threat to the Grand Prix establishment. Driving for Porsche KG, the East German defector Edgar Barth delivered a performance of clinical precision. Barth, a mountain-climb specialist whose mechanical sympathy was forged in the workshops of BMW, was the perfect pilot for the technical demands of the "Green Hell," where he secured a remarkable sixth place overall and second the Formula 2 class.
The Porsche 718 RSK was a masterclass in mid-engined agility and aerodynamic efficiency. An evolution of the 550A Spyder, the RSK featured a sleek, low-drag aluminum body and a sophisticated spaceframe chassis. At its heart sat the legendary Type 547/3 "Fuhrmann" engine - a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-four with four overhead camshafts and twin-spark ignition, producing approximately 142-150 bhp. While significantly outpowered by the 2.5-liter Ferraris and Vanwalls, the 718 RSK utilized its superior power-to-weight ratio and nimble handling to outpace much larger machinery on the twisty Eifel circuit.
Barth’s sixth-place finish was historic, representing the best-ever Formula 1 result for Porsche since their 1957 debut. This performance shattered the notion that small-displacement cars were merely "moving chicanes" and laid the groundwork for Porsche’s eventual factory entry into Grand Prix racing. Barth’s triumph at the Nürburgring remains a definitive study in the triumph of efficiency over brute force, cementing the 718 RSK’s legacy as one of the most effective "giant-killers" in the history of the sport.
