Maria Teresa de Filippis and the Maserati 250F: Breaking the Barrier at Boavista
The 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, contested on the treacherous cobblestones and tramlines of the Circuito da Boavista in Porto, holds a unique position in the social and technical history of the sport. It was here that Maria Teresa de Filippis, piloting a privateer entry for Scuderia Centro Sud, further solidified her legacy as the first woman to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship. Often facing blatant sexism - most notably being barred from the French GP earlier that year - the Neapolitan "pioneer in a helmet" proved her mettle by qualifying and competing on one of the most physically demanding street circuits of the era.
Her vehicle was the legendary Maserati 250F, the quintessential Grand Prix machine of the 1950s. By 1958, the 250F was in its twilight years, but it remained the preferred choice for privateers due to its predictable handling and robust 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine. Producing approximately 270 bhp, the car featured a De Dion rear axle and a transverse leaf spring front suspension. De Filippis’s car (chassis #2523) was a classic example of the 250F’s longevity, a machine that demanded immense physical strength to manhandle through Porto’s high-speed sweeps and unforgiving urban topography.
During the race, de Filippis demonstrated remarkable composure, maintaining a steady pace while more experienced drivers succumbed to the circuit's hazards. Although she was eventually forced to retire on lap 6 due to an engine failure, her presence on the grid at Boavista was a transformative moment for motorsport. It proved that the cockpit of a Grand Prix car was not the exclusive domain of men, but a place where courage and technical skill were the only true currencies. Her 1958 campaign remains a foundational chapter for women in racing, personified by the roar of a Maserati on the Atlantic coast.
