1936 German Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1936 German Grand Prix was a key round of the European Championship. The race was held on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, a circuit measuring over 22 kilometers with more than 170 corners. At the time, it was the longest and most technically demanding permanent circuit used in Grand Prix racing. Results at the German Grand Prix were considered a direct measure of both driver capability and engineering quality.
Bernd Rosemeyer
Bernd Rosemeyer was one of the leading figures of pre-war Grand Prix racing. During the 1936 season, he secured the European Championship, widely regarded as the highest level of international single-seater competition before the introduction of Formula One. Rosemeyer was particularly effective on long, complex circuits, where consistency, spatial awareness, and precise car placement were decisive.
The Car: Auto Union Type C
The Auto Union Type C was developed under the technical direction of Ferdinand Porsche. It featured a supercharged V16 engine and a rear-engine layout, an unconventional solution in the 1930s. The car’s design prioritized power output and straight-line speed, while placing increased demands on vehicle balance and control through slower sections.
The Nürburgring and the Karussell
The Nürburgring Nordschleife was characterized by narrow track width, constant elevation changes, and limited visibility. The Karussell corner, constructed with steep concrete banking, required cars to remain within a defined racing line and subjected suspension and driveline components to high mechanical loads.
Behind the Scenes
The Auto Union Type C was known for uneven power delivery at low speeds, which contributed to handling difficulties on tight and irregular sections of the circuit. Rosemeyer’s results in 1936 reflected an ability to operate the car effectively across these conditions, a factor that distinguished him from several of his contemporaries.
