1952 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1952 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone. During the 1952 season, all World Championship Grands Prix were run to Formula Two regulations rather than the usual Formula One rules. For this event, Silverstone featured newly built pit facilities on the straight between Woodcote and Copse, replacing the original pits located between Abbey and Woodcote.

Qualifying

Ferrari dominated qualifying, with its three works cars occupying the leading grid positions, headed by Giuseppe Farina. Robert Manzon joined them on the four-car front row. Mike Hawthorn qualified from the second row in his Cooper-Bristol, alongside Reg Parnell and Downing.

The Race

According to the official classification, the race was won by Alberto Ascari driving for Ferrari. His teammate Piero Taruffi finished second, completing a Ferrari one-two. Mike Hawthorn finished third driving a Cooper-Bristol, securing a podium position against the dominant works Ferrari team.

The Race and Mike Hawthorn

Mike Hawthorn’s third-place finish marked the first World Championship podium of his career. Driving for the privately entered LD Hawthorn team, he demonstrated the competitiveness of the Cooper-Bristol package during the Formula Two era of the championship.

The Car: Cooper T20 Bristol

Hawthorn drove the Cooper T20 Bristol, powered by a 2.0-litre Bristol engine built to Formula Two specifications. The car was representative of Cooper’s early front-engined Grand Prix designs and played a key role in Hawthorn’s early Formula One career.

Silverstone: Stowe

Stowe corner was one of Silverstone’s fastest and most demanding bends, approached at high speed from the Hangar Straight. In 1952, it remained a defining section of the circuit, emphasizing balance and stability through long, sweeping turns.

Historical Context

The 1952 British Grand Prix formed part of Mike Hawthorn’s breakthrough season in World Championship racing. By the end of the year, he had established himself as a consistent front-runner in Cooper machinery, laying the foundation for a career that would later include multiple Grand Prix victories and the 1958 World Drivers’ Championship title with Ferrari.
