Race Context
The 1953 Argentine Grand Prix was held on 18 January at the Autódromo 17 de Octubre in Buenos Aires and was the opening round of the 1953 World Championship of Drivers. As in the 1952 season, the championship was contested under Formula Two regulations. The event marked the first World Championship Grand Prix held in South America.
The Race
Alberto Ascari secured pole position for Ferrari, recording his fourth consecutive World Championship pole. Ferrari fielded a strong lineup including Ascari, Nino Farina, Luigi Villoresi, and Mike Hawthorn, while Maserati entered Juan Manuel Fangio, José Froilán González, and Felice Bonetto. The race was won by Alberto Ascari driving for Ferrari. Starting from pole position, Ascari led the race from start to finish and claimed his seventh consecutive World Championship victory. Luigi Villoresi finished second for Ferrari, one lap behind the winner, while José Froilán González completed the podium in third place for Maserati.
The Car: Ferrari 500
Ascari drove the Ferrari 500, powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine built to Formula Two specifications. The model dominated the 1952–1953 seasons and formed the technical foundation of Ferrari’s success during the Formula Two era of the World Championship.
Buenos Aires — Grandstand
The grandstands at the Autódromo 17 de Octubre framed the circuit and reflected the strong local interest in the event. The race attracted significant attention as the first World Championship Grand Prix staged on the South American continent.
Historical Context
Ascari’s victory in Argentina gave him an early lead in the 1953 Drivers’ Championship and reinforced Ferrari’s dominance under Formula Two regulations.
