1953 F1 Swiss Grand Prix Art Print

Race Overview
The 1953 Swiss Grand Prix was held on 23 August 1953 at the Bremgarten Circuit near Bern. As in the 1952 and 1953 seasons, the championship was contested under Formula Two regulations rather than the usual Formula One rules.

Race Result
Alberto Ascari won the race for Ferrari, leading a Ferrari lockout of the podium ahead of Nino Farina in second place and Mike Hawthorn in third, according to the official classification. This victory proved to be the final World Championship race win and final classified finish of Ascari’s Grand Prix career. Toulo de Graffenried entered the race in a private Maserati A6GCM, and his Swiss GP ended in retirement on lap 49 due to transmission failure.

Notable Context
The event marked a brief return to World Championship competition for pre-war Grand Prix star Hermann Lang. Driving for Maserati, Lang finished fifth, which became the best result of his short post-war Formula One career and one of only two World Championship starts he made in the 1950s.

Historical Context
Baron Emmanuel “Toulo” de Graffenried was a Swiss racing driver who started 23 World Championship Grands Prix from 1950 and scored nine championship points. He remained best known for winning the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a year before the World Championship began. After retiring, he ran a car dealership in Lausanne, worked as a stunt double during the filming of "The Racers", and later appeared regularly in the Formula One paddock. He was also the last surviving driver to have competed in the inaugural 1950 World Championship Grand Prix.
