1955 24 Hours of Le Mans Art Print

Race Context

The 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 23rd running of the race and was held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France. The event became one of the most significant and tragic races in motorsport history due to a major accident that occurred early in the race, resulting in numerous spectator fatalities.

The Race and Juan Manuel Fangio

Juan Manuel Fangio shared the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with Stirling Moss. During the opening hours, the Mercedes drivers were running at the front of the field in a high-speed duel with the Jaguar entries. On lap 35, a multi-car accident on the main straight resulted in the death of driver Pierre Levegh and a large number of spectators. Following the incident, Fangio continued racing until Mercedes-Benz withdrew all cars from the event later in the race.

The Car: Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was powered by a 3.0-liter inline-eight engine and represented the most advanced sports-racing car of its era. The car featured a lightweight magnesium alloy body and was developed directly from Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix technology. The 1955 Le Mans entry marked the final competitive appearance of the 300 SLR.

Circuit de la Sarthe — Tertre Rouge

The Tertre Rouge corner formed the transition from the infield section of the circuit onto the long Mulsanne Straight. In 1955, the corner was taken at high speed and played a critical role in overall lap time by determining exit speed onto the circuit’s fastest section.

Historical Context

After the fatal accident, Mercedes-Benz made the decision to withdraw from the race as a gesture of responsibility. Although Jaguar went on to win the event, the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans led to widespread changes in circuit safety standards and influenced the future direction of international motorsport regulations.
