1954 F1 Argentine Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1954 Argentine Grand Prix was held on 17 January at the Autódromo 17 de Octubre in Buenos Aires and served as the opening round of the 1954 World Championship of Drivers. The race was unique in World Championship history as it was run on the circuit layout in the opposite direction compared to all other editions of the Argentine Grand Prix.

The Race

Giuseppe Farina secured pole position at the age of 47 years and 79 days. This remains the record for the oldest driver to achieve pole position in a Formula One World Championship race. The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Maserati. The victory marked Fangio’s first win at his home Grand Prix. He went on to win the Argentine Grand Prix in each of the following three seasons.

The Car: Maserati 250F

Fangio drove the Maserati 250F, a newly introduced 2.5-liter Formula One car for the 1954 season. The model became one of the defining Grand Prix cars of the era and was used by Fangio during his championship-winning campaign.

Autódromo 17 de Octubre — Almirante William Brown White Arch

The Autódromo 17 de Octubre featured the white arch dedicated to Admiral William Brown, a prominent architectural landmark visible from several sections of the circuit and frequently appearing in period photography of Argentine Grand Prix events.

Historical Context

Juan Manuel Fangio competed in Formula One World Championship races between 1950 and 1958. During this period, he won five World Drivers’ Championship titles and, at the time of his retirement, held the records for most victories, pole positions, fastest laps, and podium finishes. The 1954 Argentine Grand Prix represented the start of his most successful championship season and remains a key reference point in his career, linking his achievements at the highest level of international motor racing with victory in front of a home audience.
