1956 F1 Argentine Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1956 Argentine Grand Prix was held on 22 January at the Autódromo Municipal Ciudad de Buenos Aires and opened the 1956 World Championship of Drivers. Following Mercedes-Benz’s withdrawal from Formula One, the grid consisted exclusively of Italian cars from Ferrari and Maserati. Juan Manuel Fangio began the season with Ferrari, while Stirling Moss led Maserati’s campaign.
The Race
Ferrari dominated qualifying, occupying the first three grid positions. Fangio secured pole position with a lap time more than two seconds faster than the next competitor, underlining Ferrari’s early-season pace advantage. The race was won by Ferrari car no. 34 as a shared drive between Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Musso. Fangio, having taken over Musso’s car after 30 laps, passed Moss late in the race and finished unchallenged.
Shared Drive — Fangio and Musso
Luigi Musso drove the Ferrari D50 for the opening 30 laps before handing the car over to Fangio due to mechanical issues affecting Fangio’s own Ferrari. Fangio rejoined without losing Musso’s position and carried the car to victory. The result was officially credited as a shared win, with both Fangio and Musso classified as winners of the Argentine Grand Prix.
The Car: Lancia Ferrari D50
The Ferrari D50 was originally designed by Lancia and powered by a 2.5-litre V8 engine. After Lancia’s withdrawal, Ferrari adopted and developed the car for the 1956 season. At Buenos Aires, the D50 demonstrated both speed and resilience amid widespread mechanical attrition.
Buenos Aires — Ombú Corner
The Ombú corner was a characteristic feature of the Buenos Aires circuit. It formed part of the flowing infield section and was a recognizable visual element of the Argentine Grand Prix layout.
Historical Context
The 1956 Argentine Grand Prix marked Luigi Musso’s debut race for Ferrari and remains the only Formula One World Championship victory of his career. The event set the tone for the 1956 season, highlighting both Ferrari’s depth and the unpredictable nature of post-Mercedes Formula One competition.
