1956 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1956 British Grand Prix was held on 14 July at Silverstone and was the sixth round of the eight-race 1956 World Championship of Drivers. The event was run on Silverstone’s fast, open layout, where sustained high speeds placed emphasis on reliability and pit strategy.

The Race

According to the official classification, the race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Ferrari. Second place was awarded as a shared drive to Ferrari car no. 4, driven by Alfonso de Portago for 70 laps and Peter Collins for 30 laps, with the pair sharing the points for second place. Jean Behra finished third for Maserati.

The Race and Robert Manzon

Robert Manzon competed for Équipe Gordini and was classified ninth at the finish, seven laps behind the winner. His result reflected the gap between the smaller French private and semi-works teams and the leading factory Ferrari and Maserati entries during the 1956 season.

The Car: Gordini Type 32

Manzon drove the Gordini Type 32, powered by a 2.5-litre straight-eight engine built to the contemporary Formula One regulations. The car represented Gordini’s continued participation in the World Championship despite increasing competition from larger manufacturers.

Silverstone — Farm Straight

The Farm Straight was one of Silverstone’s fastest sections, linking key corners and highlighting the circuit’s origins as a former airfield. In 1956, it remained a defining visual and technical feature of the British Grand Prix.

Historical Context

Robert Manzon competed in Formula One World Championship events between 1950 and 1956, starting 29 Grands Prix and achieving two podium finishes while driving for Gordini, Rosier, and Ferrari. At the time of his death in 2015, he was the last surviving driver to have taken part in the inaugural Formula One World Championship season of 1950.
