1955 F1 British Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1955 British Grand Prix was held at the Aintree Circuit and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. The circuit was newly constructed around the Grand National horse racing course near Liverpool and was regarded at the time as one of the most modern and safety-focused racing venues in Europe.

The Race

The race was won by Stirling Moss driving for Mercedes-Benz. Juan Manuel Fangio finished second, followed by Karl Kling in third and Piero Taruffi in fourth. The result represented a complete Mercedes-Benz domination, with the first four classified drivers all driving Mercedes-powered cars.

The Race and Stirling Moss

Stirling Moss secured his first Formula One World Championship victory at Aintree. He led home his Mercedes teammates, finishing narrowly ahead of Fangio. The win came on home soil and marked a major milestone in Moss’s career, establishing him as a front-line Grand Prix driver.

The Car: Mercedes-Benz W196

Moss drove the Mercedes-Benz W196, powered by a 2.5-liter straight-eight engine. The W196 formed the backbone of Mercedes-Benz’s factory effort during the 1954 and 1955 seasons and was responsible for a series of dominant performances in World Championship competition.

Historical Context

The 1955 British Grand Prix was notable for producing an all-Mercedes top-four finish, a result not repeated by a single engine manufacturer in Formula One World Championship racing until decades later. Moss’s victory marked the beginning of his record as the most successful Grand Prix driver never to win a World Championship title.
