1955 F1 Dutch Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Circuit Zandvoort and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. The race was scheduled over 100 laps on a circuit set among coastal sand dunes. Persistent drizzle made the surface slippery throughout the event, increasing the difficulty of maintaining control and consistency.
The Race
The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Mercedes-Benz after starting from pole position. His teammate Stirling Moss finished second, while Luigi Musso secured third place for Maserati. Fangio and Moss established the early pace, with Musso in pursuit, as several challengers fell back or retired in the demanding conditions.
The Race and Roberto Mières
Roberto Mières competed in the race driving for Maserati. He finished fourth, one lap behind the winner. During the race, Mières advanced after overtaking Jean Behra and continued to close on the leading group, capitalizing on retirements and the difficult track conditions.
The Car: Maserati 250F
Mières drove the Maserati 250F, a 2.5-liter Formula One car introduced in 1954 and used through 1960. A total of 26 examples were built. The 250F competed in 46 World Championship races and achieved eight victories, while also recording numerous wins in non-championship events during the same period.
Zandvoort: Hugenholtzbocht
The Hugenholtzbocht was a distinctive corner at Zandvoort, set within the surrounding sand dunes. Its camber and location made it a recognizable visual feature of the circuit and a section where car control was particularly important in wet conditions.
Historical Context
The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix showcased the competitiveness of Mercedes-Benz during the season and highlighted the enduring capabilities of the Maserati 250F. Stirling Moss later said that the 250F was the best front-engined F1 car he drove.
