1951 F1 French Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1951 French Grand Prix was held at the Reims-Gueux circuit and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. The race also carried the honorary title of the European Grand Prix, reflecting its status within the international racing calendar. The event was contested over 77 laps of the 7.816 km Reims circuit, resulting in a total race distance of 601.832 km, the longest Grand Prix distance in Formula One World Championship history.

The Race

The race was won jointly by Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli, driving an Alfa Romeo 159. This marked the first of three occasions in Formula One history where victory was shared between two drivers who competed in the same car. For Fagioli, the result represented his first World Championship Grand Prix victory, making him the oldest driver ever to win a Formula One World Championship race, a record that remains unbroken.

The Race and Aldo Gordini

The 1951 French GP marked Aldo Gordini’s World Championship debut. Driving for Équipe Gordini, he retired from the race on lap 27 due to an engine-related mechanical failure, ending his participation before the halfway distance.

The Car: Simca-Gordini Type 11

Gordini drove the Simca-Gordini Type 11, powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The car represented Équipe Gordini’s standard Formula One entry during the 1951 season, competing against the more powerful factory Alfa Romeo and Ferrari teams.

Reims-Gueux — Auberge de la Garenne

The Reims-Gueux circuit utilized public roads passing close to local buildings and countryside. The Auberge de la Garenne, located near the course, was a well-known landmark and frequently appeared in period photography associated with French Grand Prix races at Reims.
