1952 F1 French Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1952 French Grand Prix was held at the Rouen-les-Essarts circuit and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. Unlike most championship events, the race was run to a fixed time limit of three hours rather than a predetermined distance. The event was also notable for featuring the largest age gap between competitors of any World Championship race.

The Race

Alberto Ascari secured pole position, his second consecutive pole of the season. Ferrari occupied the entire front row of the grid, with Giuseppe Farina and Piero Taruffi qualifying alongside Ascari. The race was won by Alberto Ascari driving for Ferrari. Ascari led from start to finish, followed by Farina in second place. Although the Gordini drivers Robert Manzon and Jean Behra briefly ran third and fourth at the end of the opening lap, Taruffi regained third place on lap 4 and held it to the finish, resulting in an all-Ferrari podium.

The Car: Ferrari 500

Ascari drove the Ferrari 500, powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine built to Formula Two regulations, which governed the 1952 World Championship. The car proved dominant throughout the season, combining reliability with consistent performance across varied circuits.

Rouen-les-Essarts — Virage du Nouveau Monde

The Rouen-les-Essarts circuit was a fast road course set on public roads with significant elevation changes. The Virage du Nouveau Monde was one of the circuit’s most recognizable corners and a defining visual feature of the French GP at Rouen.

Historical Context

Ascari’s victory at Rouen was his second consecutive World Championship win of the 1952 season and further reinforced Ferrari’s dominance under the Formula Two regulations.
