1956 F1 French Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1956 French Grand Prix was held on 1 July at the Reims circuit and was the fifth round of the eight-race 1956 World Championship of Drivers. The race was contested on the fast Reims road circuit, known for its long straights and sustained high-speed running.
The Race
The race was won by Peter Collins driving for Ferrari. Eugenio Castellotti finished second in another Ferrari, while Jean Behra completed the podium in third place driving for Maserati.
The Race and Maurice Trintignant
Maurice Trintignant entered the French Grand Prix driving the Bugatti T251. His race ended after 18 laps when he retired due to throttle problems. Trintignant’s retirement marked the end of Bugatti’s sole appearance in a Formula One World Championship race.
The Car: Bugatti T251
The Bugatti T251 was a one-off Formula One design powered by a 2.5-litre straight-eight engine. It proved uncompetitive at Reims and was not entered in any subsequent World Championship events. The 1956 French Grand Prix therefore remains the only Formula One World Championship start for a Bugatti car.
Reims — Virage de Muizon
The Virage de Muizon was one of the key corners of the Reims circuit, leading onto long flat-out sections of road. It was a defining visual feature of the track and emphasized the high-speed nature of the French Grand Prix during this period.
Historical Context
Bugatti had been one of the dominant forces of pre-war Grand Prix racing, with major successes in events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, Targa Florio, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 1956 French Grand Prix represented the marque’s final appearance at the highest level of World Championship single-seater racing, closing a long chapter in Bugatti’s motorsport history.
