The race was won by Peter Collins driving for Ferrari. Eugenio Castellotti finished second in another Ferrari, while Jean Behra completed the podium in third place driving for Maserati.

Maurice Trintignant entered the French Grand Prix driving the Bugatti T251. His race ended after 18 laps when he retired due to throttle problems. Trintignant’s retirement marked the end of Bugatti’s sole appearance in a Formula One World Championship race.

The Bugatti T251 was a one-off Formula One design powered by a 2.5-litre straight-eight engine. It proved uncompetitive at Reims and was not entered in any subsequent World Championship events.
