The 1956 German Grand Prix was held on 5 August at the Nürburgring and was the seventh round of the eight-race 1956 World Championship of Drivers. The event was contested on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the long pre-war circuit configuration running through the Eifel mountains.

The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Ferrari. At 45 years of age, Fangio took victory in one of the most demanding races on the calendar. During the race, Fangio broke Hermann Lang’s lap record, which had stood for 17 years and had been set in a Mercedes.

Fangio drove the Lancia Ferrari D50, powered by a 2.5-litre V8 engine. The car was originally designed by Lancia and taken over by Ferrari for the 1956 season following Lancia’s withdrawal from Formula One.
