1954 F1 German Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1954 German Grand Prix was held at the Nürburgring and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. For this edition, the race distance was increased from 18 to 22 laps, bringing the total length to approximately 500 kilometres, in line with the standard Grand Prix distance used at the time.
The Race
According to the official classification, the race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Mercedes-Benz. Ferrari drivers Mike Hawthorn, sharing his car with José Froilán González, finished second, while Maurice Trintignant completed the podium in third place for Scuderia Ferrari.
The Race and Hermann Lang
Hermann Lang competed in the German Grand Prix driving a Mercedes-Benz W196 in what became his final World Championship appearance. Lang retired from the race after ten laps following a spin and was not classified at the finish.
The Car: Mercedes-Benz W196
Mercedes-Benz introduced a new open-wheeled version of the W196 at the Nürburgring, fielded for Fangio, Karl Kling, and Lang. This configuration replaced the streamlined bodywork previously used, following Mercedes-Benz’s defeat at Silverstone earlier in the season.
Nürburgring: Südkehre
The Südkehre was one of the Nürburgring’s most distinctive corners, marking a slow, tight section of the Nordschleife after a long downhill run. The corner emphasized braking stability and traction and was a recognizable visual reference point on the circuit.
Historical Context
The 1954 German GP highlighted Mercedes-Benz’s rapid technical response during its return to Grand Prix racing. Fangio’s victory reinforced Mercedes-Benz’s competitiveness in the championship, while Hermann Lang’s retirement brought the career of a pre-war Mercedes “Silver Arrows” star to a close at the World Championship level.
