1954 Indianapolis 500 Art Print

Race Context

The 1954 Indianapolis 500 was the 38th running of the race and a round of the AAA National Championship. It was held on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, during an era dominated by front-engine roadsters powered by Offenhauser engines.

The Race and Bill Vukovich

Bill Vukovich won the 1954 Indianapolis 500 after leading a large portion of the race. He took the lead early and remained at the front for much of the 500-mile distance. Vukovich led 90 laps and finished with a significant margin over the rest of the field, securing his second Indianapolis 500 victory.

The Car: Kurtis Kraft 4000 Offenhauser “Fuel Injection Special”

Vukovich drove a Kurtis Kraft 4000 chassis powered by a 4.5-liter Offenhauser four-cylinder engine. The car was entered as the “Fuel Injection Special” by the Fuel Injection team in association with Howard Keck. The Kurtis Kraft–Offenhauser combination represented the established technical standard at Indianapolis during the mid-1950s.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Turn 2

Turn 2 marked the exit of the southeast corner of the oval and the transition onto the back straight. In the 1954 configuration, the corner emphasized maintaining speed and stability through sustained high-speed operation.

Historical Context

Bill Vukovich won the Indianapolis 500 in 1953 and 1954. During the 1955 Indianapolis 500, while leading the race, he was involved in a fatal accident. His consecutive victories and his death the following year remain among the most significant chapters in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history.
