1952 Indianapolis 500 Art Print
Race Context
The 1952 Indianapolis 500 was the 36th running of the race and part of the AAA National Championship. It was held on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval during a period of technical experimentation, as teams explored alternatives to the established gasoline-powered Offenhauser engines. Qualifying performance remained a major point of attention, often highlighting engineering innovation independently of race results.
Qualifying and Fred Agabashian
Fred Agabashian secured the pole position for the 1952 Indianapolis 500. His qualifying run marked a notable departure from conventional Indianapolis practice, as it was achieved with a diesel-powered car rather than a traditional gasoline engine. Although Agabashian did not win the race, his pole position became one of the most discussed technical achievements of the event.
The Car: Kurtis Kraft Cummins Diesel “Cummins Diesel Special”
Agabashian drove a Kurtis Kraft chassis fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged Cummins diesel engine. This entry represented the first appearance of a turbo-diesel powerplant at the Indianapolis 500. The engine’s high torque characteristics and fuel efficiency distinguished it from contemporary gasoline-powered competitors, particularly in qualifying trim.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval emphasized sustained speed and mechanical reliability over a full 500-mile distance. In qualifying, however, outright performance over a limited number of laps allowed experimental designs to demonstrate their potential without the constraints of race longevity.
Behind the Scenes
The Cummins Diesel Special qualified on pole but was forced to retire early in the race due to mechanical failure. Despite its short race distance, the car’s qualifying performance established a unique milestone in Indianapolis history as the first diesel-powered entry to lead the field at the start of the race.
