1951 Indianapolis 500 Art Print
Race Context
The 1951 Indianapolis 500 was the 35th running of the race and a round of the AAA National Championship. It was held on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval and reflected the continued dominance of traditional roadster layouts in American open-wheel racing. The event maintained its position as the most important race on the national calendar.
The Race and Lee Wallard
Lee Wallard won the 1951 Indianapolis 500 after completing the full 500-mile distance. The race was marked by a high rate of attrition, with multiple leading contenders retiring due to mechanical failures. Wallard assumed the lead during the later stages of the race and held it to the finish. His victory remains his only win in Championship Car competition.
The Car: Kurtis Kraft Offenhauser “Belanger Special”
Wallard drove a Kurtis Kraft roadster powered by a 4.5-liter Offenhauser four-cylinder engine. The Kurtis Kraft–Offenhauser combination was the prevailing technical standard at Indianapolis during the early 1950s. The Offenhauser engine was known for its durability and sustained performance over long distances, attributes critical to success at the Speedway.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Turn 1
Turn 1 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway marked the transition from the front straight into the southwest section of the oval. In 1951, the corner remained narrow by later standards and placed significant demands on braking stability and chassis balance at the start of each lap.
Behind the Scenes
Lee Wallard suffered severe burns during a crash later in the 1951 season and never competed in another Championship Car race. His Indianapolis 500 victory therefore stands as a singular result within a short and abruptly ended top-level career.
