Race Context
 
The 1950 Indianapolis 500 was the 34th running of the race. It was held on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval and formed part of the AAA National Championship season. The event took place in the early post-war period, when the Indianapolis 500 remained the most important race in American open-wheel competition.
 
The Race and Johnnie Parsons
 
Johnnie Parsons completed the full 500-mile distance and was classified as the winner of the race. For much of the event, Bill Vukovich led the field and appeared on course for victory. With fewer than 30 laps remaining, Vukovich retired after a steering failure. Parsons inherited the lead and maintained it to the finish, securing his first Indianapolis 500 victory.
 
The Car: Kurtis Kraft Offy “Wynn’s Friction Proofing Special”
 
Parsons drove a Kurtis Kraft chassis powered by an Offenhauser four-cylinder engine. The Kurtis Kraft–Offenhauser combination was the dominant technical package at Indianapolis during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Designed by Frank Kurtis, the chassis was optimized for the Speedway’s oval configuration, while the Offenhauser engine was valued for its reliability over long distances.
 
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Pagoda
 
In 1950, Indianapolis Motor Speedway retained much of its early architectural character. The Japanese-style Pagoda overlooking the main straight was a prominent feature of the facility and a visual reference point associated with the Speedway’s pre-war and immediate post-war eras.
 
Behind the Scenes
 
Bill Vukovich led 150 laps of the race but did not finish. His retirement marked the second consecutive year in which he lost a likely Indianapolis 500 victory due to mechanical failure, reinforcing the race’s long-standing emphasis on durability over outright pace.
