1956 Indianapolis 500 Art Print

Race Context

The 1956 Indianapolis 500 was the 40th running of the race and a round of the AAA National Championship. It was held on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. In response to the fatal accidents during the 1955 race, the Speedway was almost completely resurfaced with asphalt prior to the 1956 event as a safety measure.

The Race and Pat Flaherty

Pat Flaherty won the 1956 Indianapolis 500 after completing the full 500-mile distance. He took the lead late in the race following the retirement of race leader Paul Russo and maintained the lead to the finish. The victory was Flaherty’s only Indianapolis 500 win.

The Car: Watson Offenhauser “John Zink Special”

Flaherty drove a Watson roadster powered by a 4.5-liter Offenhauser four-cylinder engine. The car was entered as the “John Zink Special” by the John Zink team. The Watson chassis represented a new generation of Indianapolis roadsters and marked a shift away from earlier Kurtis Kraft designs.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Clarence Cagle’s Miracle

The 1956 race became known as “Clarence Cagle’s Miracle.” Heavy rain in the days before the event flooded the infield and access tunnels, threatening cancellation. Clarence Cagle, the Speedway’s superintendent, led a continuous cleanup operation in which large volumes of water were pumped out over approximately 48 hours, allowing the race to start as scheduled.

Historical Context

Pat Flaherty was the last driver to win the Indianapolis 500 while wearing a T-shirt rather than a fire-resistant driving suit. Following the 1956 race, flame-retardant uniforms became standard for all Indianapolis 500 competitors.
