1954 F1 Italian Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1954 Italian Grand Prix was held on 5 September at Monza and was the eighth round of the nine-race 1954 World Championship of Drivers. The race was run over 80 laps on Monza’s high-speed layout, a circuit that emphasized outright speed and aerodynamic efficiency.
The Race
The race was won by Juan Manuel Fangio driving for Mercedes-Benz after starting from pole position. Mike Hawthorn finished second for Ferrari, while Fangio’s Mercedes teammates Umberto Maglioli and José Froilán González were classified third.
The Race and Juan Manuel Fangio
Fangio controlled the race from the front, converting pole position into a clear victory. The result added another win to his 1954 campaign and further demonstrated Mercedes-Benz’s competitive advantage on fast circuits such as Monza.
The Car: Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner
Fangio drove the closed-wheel Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner, also known as the “Type Monza.” This aerodynamic bodywork configuration was developed for high-speed circuits and was used only on a small number of occasions. The W196 Streamliner achieved victories at the 1954 French Grand Prix, the 1954 Italian Grand Prix, and the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, all driven by Fangio. These remain the only Formula One World Championship races won by a closed-wheel car.
Monza — Before the Curva del Vialone
The section of circuit before the Curva del Vialone lay along one of Monza’s fastest approaches. In 1954, this area highlighted the advantages of aerodynamic efficiency, making it particularly suited to the streamlined Mercedes-Benz design.
Historical Context
The 1954 Italian Grand Prix became part of Formula One history not only for Fangio’s victory but also for its place in the brief and successful use of closed-wheel Grand Prix cars. Among the spectators at Monza that day was 14-year-old Mario Andretti, who would later become both a Formula One World Champion and an Indianapolis 500 winner.
