1952 F1 Italian Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1952 Italian Grand Prix was held at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and formed part of the Formula One World Championship. The race was contested over 80 laps on Monza’s high-speed circuit and took place during a season dominated by Ferrari, with Alfa Romeo absent from the championship.
The Race
According to the official classification, the race was won by Alberto Ascari driving for Ferrari after starting from pole position. José Froilán González finished second for Maserati, with Luigi Villoresi completing the podium in third place for Ferrari. Ascari’s victory extended his winning streak to six consecutive World Championship races.
The Race and José Froilán González
González made his only World Championship appearance of the 1952 season at Monza. He took the lead at the start of the race and led for the opening 36 laps. A slow pit stop allowed the Ferraris of Ascari and Villoresi to pass him. Later in the race, González recovered to overtake Villoresi and secure second place at the finish.
The Car: Maserati A6GCM
González drove the Maserati A6GCM, powered by a 2.0-liter engine. The car represented Maserati’s factory effort during the 1952 season and competed against Ferrari’s dominant lineup, which occupied much of the front of the grid and controlled the latter stages of the race.
Monza — Old Grandstand
The Monza circuit featured large permanent grandstands overlooking the main straight. The old Monza grandstand was a prominent architectural element of the venue and formed a key visual backdrop to Italian Grand Prix events in the early 1950s.
Historical Context
The 1952 Italian GP highlighted Ferrari’s dominance of the championship while also marking a notable performance by Maserati. González’s second-place finish at Monza stood as a strong result in his sole World Championship appearance of the season.
