1955 F1 Monaco Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix was held on the streets of Monte Carlo and was the second round of the seven-race 1955 World Championship of Drivers. The event carried the honorary title Grand Prix d’Europe and was run over 100 laps on the tight and unforgiving street circuit.
The Race
The race was won by Maurice Trintignant driving for Ferrari after starting ninth on the grid. Eugenio Castellotti finished second for Lancia. Third place was shared by Maserati drivers Jean Behra and Cesare Perdisa. The result came after a race marked by attrition among the leading contenders.
Key Incidents
The Mercedes drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss initially dominated, running first and second until mid-distance. Fangio retired with transmission failure, handing the lead to Moss, who held a commanding advantage before his engine failed on lap 80. Alberto Ascari then inherited the lead but misjudged the chicane at the tunnel exit and crashed his Lancia through the barriers into the harbour. Ascari escaped by swimming to safety.
The Race and Alberto Ascari
Alberto Ascari’s accident at Monaco GP brought an abrupt end to his final Grand Prix appearance. Although he survived the crash without serious injury, he was killed four days later during a testing accident at Monza. The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix thus marked the final World Championship race of the two-time World Drivers’ Champion.
The Car: Lancia D50
Ascari drove the Lancia D50, powered by a 2.5-litre V8 engine. The model represented Lancia’s ambitious Formula One project for the new regulations introduced in 1954 and was driven by Ascari and Castellotti during the 1955 season.
Monaco: Opéra de Monte-Carlo
The area around the Opéra de Monte-Carlo formed part of the circuit’s urban backdrop, emphasizing the proximity of buildings and barriers that defined Monaco racing. This section highlighted the precision required to compete on one of Formula One’s most demanding street circuits.
Historical Context
The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix is remembered for its dramatic sequence of retirements, Ascari’s harbour crash, and an unexpected victory for Ferrari. It also stands as a pivotal and tragic moment in Formula One history, marking the final chapter of Alberto Ascari’s Grand Prix career.
