1956 F1 Monaco Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1956 Monaco Grand Prix was held on the streets of Monte Carlo and formed part of the 1956 World Championship of Drivers. The race was run over 100 laps on the narrow harbor-side circuit, where track position and consistency were decisive.
The Race
The race was won by Stirling Moss driving for Maserati. Juan Manuel Fangio finished second, while Jean Behra was classified third. Moss took the lead on the opening lap and maintained first place throughout the race. Fangio encountered several problems during the race. On lap 2 he struck the straw bales, triggering incidents that led to the retirements of Harry Schell and Luigi Musso. On lap 32 Fangio hit the harbor wall and bent a rear wheel; after repairs he handed the car over to Eugenio Castellotti.
The Race and Stirling Moss
Stirling Moss led every lap of the Monaco Grand Prix. Late in the race, contact involving Cesare Perdisa caused Moss’s bonnet to lift, briefly reducing his pace and allowing Fangio to close the gap. Moss retained control to the finish, winning the race with a margin of six seconds.
The Car: Maserati 250F
Moss drove the Maserati 250F, powered by a 2.5-litre engine. The model was the backbone of Maserati’s Formula One program during the mid-1950s and was noted for its balance and effectiveness on tight, technical circuits such as Monaco.
Monaco — Monte-Carlo Harbor
The harbor section of the Monaco circuit ran directly alongside the waterfront, bordered by minimal run-off and barriers. This area underscored the precision required to race at Monaco and played a central role in several of the race’s key incidents.
Historical Context
The 1956 Monaco GP is remembered as one of Stirling Moss’s most controlled victories, achieved by leading from start to finish on one of Formula One’s most demanding circuits. Stirling Moss later said that the 250F was the best front-engined F1 car he drove.
