1951 F1 Spanish Grand Prix Art Print
Race Context
The 1951 Spanish Grand Prix was held at the Circuito de Pedralbes in Barcelona and was the eighth and final round of the 1951 Formula One World Championship. The race would determine the outcome of the Drivers’ Championship and placed strategic emphasis on tyre selection and durability on the fast public-road circuit.
The Race
Juan Manuel Fangio won the race driving an Alfa Romeo 159M. Entering the event, Fangio held a two-point lead over Alberto Ascari. Ferrari selected 16-inch rear tyres, while Alfa Romeo opted for 18-inch tyres, which proved more suitable for the circuit conditions. Ferrari suffered multiple tyre tread failures during the race: Piero Taruffi on lap 6, Luigi Villoresi on lap 7, Ascari on lap 8, and José Froilán González on lap 14. These incidents forced repeated pit stops and removed Ferrari from contention for victory.
The Race and Juan Manuel Fangio
With Ferrari delayed by tyre problems, Fangio maintained a clear advantage and won the race. Ascari finished fourth, which was insufficient to overturn Fangio’s championship lead. Fangio’s victory secured him the 1951 World Championship, the first Drivers’ title of his career.
The Car: Alfa Romeo 159M
Fangio drove the Alfa Romeo 159M, powered by a 1.5-liter supercharged straight-eight engine. The car’s tyre choice and race consistency proved decisive in the championship finale, allowing Alfa Romeo to prevail over Ferrari in the final event of the season.
Circuito de Pedralbes — Avenue d'Esplugues
The Pedralbes circuit was laid out on public roads in the western part of Barcelona. Avenue d'Esplugues formed a major section of the course, contributing to the circuit’s long straights and high average speeds characteristic of the venue.
Historical Context
Following the Spanish GP, Alfa Romeo announced that it would withdraw from the 1952 Formula One season due to financial constraints. The race therefore marked both Fangio’s first World Championship title and the end of Alfa Romeo’s participation in Formula One at that time.
