1954 F1 Spanish Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1954 Spanish Grand Prix was held at the Pedralbes street circuit in Barcelona and was the ninth and final round of the 1954 World Championship of Drivers. The race was run over 80 laps on a fast public-road circuit bordered closely by buildings and spectators, reflecting the character of post-war European street racing.

The Race

According to the official classification, the race was won by Mike Hawthorn driving for Ferrari after starting from third position on the grid. Luigi Musso finished second for Maserati, while Juan Manuel Fangio completed the podium in third place for Mercedes-Benz. During the race, several lead changes occurred as multiple drivers retired due to mechanical problems, including Harry Schell, Maurice Trintignant, and Stirling Moss.

The Race and Mike Hawthorn

Mike Hawthorn remained competitive throughout the race and emerged as the eventual winner after a late duel with Fangio. Fangio suffered oil loss during the closing stages, allowing Musso to pass him for second before Fangio recovered to finish third. Hawthorn maintained his pace to the finish to secure victory in the final championship race of the season.

The Car: Ferrari 553 Squalo

Hawthorn drove the Ferrari 553 Squalo, powered by a 2.5-liter engine. The race also marked the competitive debut of the Lancia D50, which featured a 90-degree V8 engine used as a stressed member of the chassis. Despite strong pace in practice, the Lancia drivers retired early, with Luigi Villoresi stopping after one lap due to brake failure and Alberto Ascari retiring after nine laps with clutch problems.

Pedralbes — Carretera de Cornellà a Fogars de Tordera

The Pedralbes circuit incorporated long straight sections of public roads, including the Carretera de Cornellà a Fogars de Tordera. These high-speed sections defined the circuit’s character and contributed to the race’s emphasis on engine performance and stability at speed.

Historical Context

The 1954 Spanish Grand Prix was the final major international race held at the Pedralbes street circuit. Following the 1955 Le Mans disaster, stricter safety regulations led to the abandonment of spectator-lined street circuits, and Pedralbes was never used again for top-level motor racing.
